Common reasons why animals need wheels include:
Hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy (DM), disc disease, cervical disc disease, ruptured discs, dog paralysis, spinal cord injuries, fractured back, neuropathy, arthritis, nerve degeneration, spinal lesion, spondylosis, DM, neuropathy, intervertebral, cruciate ligament problems, ACL, wobblers, tumors, cancer, neurological disease, and chronic leg weakness.
Almost any animal can benefit from a cart including dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, lemurs, pigs, and more. We've seen stories about rats, ducks, horses, and more.... just about anything that you can love. Click here to see some photos of animals in carts.
It is not uncommon for elderly, injured, or handicapped animals to lose the use of their back or front legs. Nerve damage, DM (Degenerative Myelopathy), cancer, arthritis, injury, accident and more can result in this condition. Fortunately, this does not need to be the end of a dog's life. A dog cart or dog wheelchair can offer an animal a wholesome and healthy quality of life.
Different carts can support either the back legs, front legs, or all four legs.
There are also accessories, and modified carts for specific conditions. These include stirrups, counterbalanced carts, training wheels, counterweights for amputees, and more. These are discussed on our cart comparison page
There are several cart designs made by several manufacturers. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages. All of the carts discussed here have been proven effective and are manufactured by people who care. Why do all these photos say "HandicappedPets.com?"
The key to understanding carts is to examine the way they are held on the animal. In some carts, the dog wears a harness that is attached, with clips, to the frame of the cart. In others, the dog sits on saddle.

Scooter is in a Doggon Rear Support Sling Cart.
Some of the advantages of a support sling cart include lower cost and the ability to clip the dog's harness to the frame without lifting the dog.
Farley (below) received his wheelchair on Oct.18. We tried the support for a few days just to get him used to it. On Oct. 21 we took him for a trial run in his new chair. All went very well. No fear or panic. He was able to run and move about freely! We have a few minor adjustments to do, but all is working well.
Thank you so much for your assistance...Farley says thanks for his mobility!!!

The cart on the left, from K9 Carts has a collapsable frame which folds flat for easy shipping. The cart on the right, manufactured by Eddies Wheels is custom fitted to the pelvic bone structure of the dog, based on breed.
